I’m curious — was the lighting natural, or did you use a subtle fill to bring out those details? The contrast between the bird and the deep shadows works beautifully, but I’d love to know how you approached the exposure in such a dark setting.
The scene was completely natural. I was walking around a lake in the Manu area of Cusco, looking for new species. The sun was just beginning to rise, which creates strong shadows and intense highlights. This was a new bird to me. Between impressed and excited, I took the best shot I could, compensating for the strong shadows and highlights with high exposure, which ensured a good exposure. Then I waited for the bird to pose in the reflection.
