Небольшая птица плотного телосложения, немного похожа на дятлов, но никогда не опирается на хвост. Часто ползает по стволам деревьев вниз головой или по нижней поверхности толстых сучьев. Ищет пищу в разломах коры и отрывает её отставшие куски. При лазании он ставит лапы не рядом, а одну поверх другой. Снято на территории бывшего поместья "Фридрихштейн", пос. Каменка, Калинградская область.
