Чёрный гриф (Aegypius monachus) очень крупный падальщик (длина 98-110 см, размах крыльев 2,5-3,0 м, масса 7-14 кг).

Оперение тёмно-бурое (у некоторых особей отдельные кроющие крыла могут быть белыми), имеется воротник из узких перьев, а голова покрыта светло-бурым пухом, образующим подобие шапочки на затылке.
Радужина тёмная, клюв буроватый, ноги свинцово-серые, восковица и участки голой кожи на «лице» – голубоватые.
Молодые птицы заметно темнее взрослых, с тёмной и более опушённой головой.
