Весной, в брачный период, и летом зеленушки самцы выглядят очень красиво. Эту птицу можно узнать по характерному окрасу: жёлто-зелёная спинка, переходящая в тёмные крылья, и пепельный хвост с яркой лимонной подводкой, жёлтая с зелёным отливом грудка, серые щеки. Кроме того, зеленушке присущ узнаваемый "сердитый взгляд", что вполне под стать такому поведению. Размером эта птица с воробья, но кажется немного крупнее из-за плотного телосложения и массивного клюва.
