Lymantria dispar, known as the Bombyx disparate in its butterfly form or the Gypsy Moth in its caterpillar form, is a species of Lepidoptera in the Erebidae family and Lymantriinae subfamily. This insect is considered a pest of deciduous forests, particularly oak groves, in the northern hemisphere. Damage is caused by caterpillars that feed on the leaves of many tree species. It is an invasive species in North America.
