In Quebec, it is often nicknamed the “horsefly” because of its preference for equines, although it can bite other mammals, including humans. Unlike a bite, the horsefly bites by using sharp mouthparts to incise the skin and feed on the blood the female needs to produce eggs. Despite their reputation as a nuisance, horseflies play an important role in the ecosystem as pollinators and a source of food for other animals.
