Эти зимородки достаточно большие.
В Израиле живет еще один вид Зимородка и довольно крупный зимородок, до 28 см в длину. Клюв до 7 см.

Красноклювая альциона охотится на крупных насекомых, грызунов, улиток, рыб, лягушек, ящериц а также певчих птиц.
В Израиле - эту птицу недаром называют "Королем-рыбаком".
