Cерая жаба – типично лесной обитатель. Обычно она ведет сумеречный образ жизни, а днем прячется под корнями деревьев, камнями и бревнами. Весной серые жабы мигрируют в водоемы для размножения, порой преодолевая расстояния до 2,5 км. Есть предположения, что брачные пары формируются еще на пути к воде.
