Длина тела: 23 - 26 см. Ширина крыла: 38 - 44 см.
Другие красочные дятлы узнаваемы по размеру, черная полоса, которая достигает конца шеи и продолжается до плеч и к передней части сундука. Другим крупным шрамом является богатый красный фон и яркий, пузатый желудок. У самцов есть красное пятно на затылке, а самки этого не делают. У молодых есть красные соски, но у них также нет язв на груди и животе, что отличает их от других дятлов.
