Это самая распространенная в Европейской части России и хорошо известная овсянка. В весеннем, более ярком оперении овсянка-самец легко узнается по золотисто-желтым тонам на груди и голове (щеках и темени). Живет на полянах, опушках, вырубках. Питается преимущественно семенами растений, а также ягодами и насекомыми.
