Статуя была создана 29-летним скульптором как экзаменационная работа во время его учебы в Италии. Ее тема - популярный во времена античности сюжет купания Венеры. Мягкость черт и удлиненные пропорции одна из характерных черт работ Жале. Скульптура была приобретена королевским домом Франции на Салоне 1834 года.
