В начале XIX века англоязычные поселенцы в предгорьях Скалистых гор наткнулись на красивую большеклювую птицу, которая загадочно появилась откуда-то с далекого запада. Они назвали её вечерний дубонос ошибочно полагая что она появляется из леса для песнопений только после захода солнца. Франкофоны назвали эту птицу более уместно le gros-bec errant, блуждающий дубонос .
