"Нимфа со скорпионом" была заказана Бартолини в 1833 году участником наполеоновского похода в Россию князем Шарлем де Бово. Мраморный вариант был завершен в 1844 году, и в 1845 году Бартолини выставил его в парижском Салоне, где работа имела большой успех. Эрмитажный экземпляр статуи заказал в 1846 году Российский император Николай I, который был очень впечатлен "Нимфой". Работу начал сам Бартолини, но доделать ее не успел — помешала смерть, настигшая скульптора в 1850 году. Статуя была завершена через год одним из лучших учеников мастера Джованни Дюпре.
