Длина растения достигает трёх метров. Происходит из Африки. Выращивается ради съедобных плодов, похожих на небольшую овальную дыню с шипами.

Наиболее широко культивируется в Центральной Америке, Новой Зеландии, Израиле. Отрицательных температур растения не переносят. "
