Синица малых размеров, отличается характерным рисунком головы, которым напоминает большую синицу: «шапочка» и горло чёрные, контрастирующие с белыми «щеками», а также с характерным белым пятном на затылке. Крылья черноватые, с двумя поперечными рядами, образованными белыми округлыми отметинами.
