Черношейная поганка-водоплавающая птица, длинной 28—34 см. Весной и летом шея чёрная, за глазами пучки перьев золотистого цвета, торчащие назад и книзу.Большую часть времени проводит на воде, на берег выходит редко. При опасности предпочитает нырять.
