Кулик размером со скворца, клюв и ноги относительно короткие. Летает очень низко над водой, как бы вздрагивая крыльями, после приземления кивает головой и часто подёргивает хвостом. В полёте на крыльях белая полоса. населяет берега рек, ручьёв, каналов, озёр и водохранилищ.
