В городе живут украинцы, русские, греки, белорусы, армяне, евреи и представители других национальностей. В общении абсолютно преобладает русский язык.
Назвали родным язык (на 5 декабря 2001 года): русский — 457 350 человек (89,53 %), украинский — 50 420 человек (9,87 %).
